Launching a New Series: Sustainable Weddings & Values-Driven Celebrations in West Marin and Beyond

Sustainable Weddings & Values-Driven Celebrations in West Marin and Beyond

Over the next several weeks, I’ll be taking a break from my normal programming to share stories of eco-friendly weddings, sustainable wedding venues, and values-based planning resources, focused on West Marin County and beyond.

Why Sustainable Weddings?

I worked in the environmental sustainability realm long before I became a wedding photographer. Environmental sustainability is a theme that runs deep for me and that has only become more urgent in the 18 years since I started my business. What felt theoretical to me in college has since become a clearly changing world. I find that many of today’s engaged couples aren’t just planning beautiful celebrations—they’re looking to reflect their values, support their communities, and minimize their environmental impact.

Why West Marin?

I credit my own interest in the environment in part to growing up in Marin County. The many hours I spent lost in its hills and forests helped me understand and value the natural world. Its ethos around environmental preservation and sustainability infused my values and views on the global environment.

While Marin does not have a large number of wedding vendors or venues, there has been a slowly growing presence of those who have long shepherded pieces of the land and more recently begun to offer opportunities for others to experience its magic too, including through weddings. Often, these people and places are living examples of the kind of environmental sustainability I’d love to see more of, and that I believe many couples would love to know more about.

Bringing Journalism Back Into My Work

This series gave me a chance to return to my roots as a professional journalist (before starting my business I worked in newspaper, magazine, and radio). Writing these profiles was a joy—and a way to honor the local makers, land stewards, and creative professionals who are quietly reshaping the wedding industry from the ground up.

I hope you’ll enjoy these small stories of people and places with big hearts. They offer a glimpse into what’s possible when we reconnect with land, community, and meaning.

First up tomorrow: a feature on Small Blue Planet, one of West Marin’s most values-aligned and environmentally committed event planning teams.
